Day 19 – After ten years on the farm

After ten years on the farm

Spring is creeping round again

The slowly melting snow

Reveals fringes and then patches of green.

The spring flowers are starting

Green stems appear in their usual place

Harbingers of the beauty to come.

The early lambs gambol on the grass

They had known nothing but snow until now.

When I first came here I loved the spring

I sat entranced by the beauty around me

Listening to the song birds

And marveling at the beauty of the wildflowers.

Today, Spring calls me out with a trumpet.

Like a solider going to war, I emerge

From my winter’s enforced quiet.

The broken fence boards cry out

Like neglected infants, they know

If I notice them, I have to fix them.

The gravel driveway is just a mud track

The gravel sits on pushed up snow banks

Daring me to catch it and put it back where it belongs.

In the north field, the circling buzzards

Mark what must be that missing goat

I will have to walk a mile to look,

The ground is still too soft for my truck.

The small barn door needs repairs, and

The big door is off its track again.

My arms and back ache at the thought.

I think I miss the snow.

Day 18 – Silent Communication

Words, I cannot speak

Emotion escapes in touch

My eyes say I love

Day 11 Cell Phones

Cell Phones

They ring at me now

From pockets of coats put away

Insanity waits

Day 10 The office

The Office

Hollow cubes exist

Like cells in a hive they wait

We force ourselves in

Day 9 – Experiments with Haikus begin

I get into bed

The sleepy cat purrs at me

“I am not moving”

Day 8 – I touch you

I touch you and you turn away

My brain won’t comprehend

My X and Y don’t seem to work

In a way your two Ys understand

We speak but don’t communicate

Our thoughts don’t get exchanged

Misunderstandings rule our day

The emptiness won’t go away

Who is this woman who took my hand?

Who is this man who is her mate?

Day 7 – Clutter

I’m sure that I shall never see

A desk that’s messier than mine

And when at last it’s clutter free

I almost think I hear it whine

I’m Naked, clothe me! It seems to say

So I leave it cluttered every day.

At least that way it can’t be said

I ignore the voices in my head.

Day Six – The tree

The Tree

The old tree bows
Weighed down with snow,
Like an old man bent with age
standing to face an unyielding world.
But under the white,
The branches are still green
And though one branch may fall today
Hundreds more remain to say
You cannot break me.
I bow before the weight of snow
But my inner boughs are evergreen.
Though I may bend for you today,
I will stand straight again.
And so I say to the winter of my years,
though I may bend a little, to honor
The  weight of time that has put snow in my hair,
My thoughts are still young,
My dreams have matured,
My hopes are evergreen.
Age cannot break me down today.
I am stronger than I look.

Day 5: Snow Princess

Surrounds and envelops me

The bare tree branches are weighted down

With the snow clinging to every surface

A fairyland outside our home

Yet as sure as your first love

Fades into disappointment

The fairy dress of snow

Fades to slush and ice

Shoveling – cold – aching

My fairy lover has changed

To a harsh demanding mistress

You would think I would learn

But I still look for the fairy princess

And greet her with joy

Each time

For awhile.
